Director Device User Experience Design

  • Location: Atlanta, GA

Position Description

This position can be located in Redmond, WA or Atlanta, GA.

Job Purpose
• Create the vision for developing, communicating and implementing AT&T User Experience on AT&T Mobile devices; follow through with the processes and tactics to implement the vision.
• Measurably improve the success of the AT&T User Experience in driving revenues and customer loyalty through successful implementation of the user experience vision.
• Be a thought leader in user experience and design innovations for Mobility.
• Oversee all work on user experience & design across the Mobility portfolio of devices and services.
• Partner with others in the broader AT&T design community to develop and extend an AT&T Experience across the array of AT&T assets (in-home, broadband & mobile).
• Manage and develop a team of technical marketing, user interface and design professionals.

Essential Job Functions
• Collaborate with internal clients to define and prioritize user experience requirements and create an implementation roadmap, based on business need.
• Develop user experience specifications and work with 3rd parties/suppliers to implement specifications, driving suppliers to create UI/UE roadmaps to meet requirements.
• Help AT&T develop a leadership position, measured by customer behavior, by successfully turning user experience trends, consumer insights and industry knowledge into actionable product and service opportunities.
• Define customer-centric UI/UE measurement criteria and test to ensure the User Experience delivers positive results – revenue generation, ease of use and customer loyalty.
• Create a UI/UE framework or design language that allows for easy extensibility of the AT&T UE as new features or services arise.
• Develop branding guidelines for hardware and software that deliver best-in-class branding and resonates with customers.
• Design and implement ‘out of box” experiences, leveraging best knowledge of consumer packaged goods/consumer electronics, that delight customers, increase satisfaction with purchase and support services/accessory cross-sell.

In addition, the Director should be able to interface at all levels of business, understand business objectives, and drive results with no instruction or supervision. The Director will be responsible and accountable to the Device & Accessory ED, group VP and CMO; Indirectly responsible and accountable to other product management EDs and peers.

The Director will be responsible for managing 3-4 Managers and 3rd party resources for UE design & development as well as defining priorities and leading work efforts for cross functional teams of suppliers and of peers/managers from product management and engineering

Position Qualifications

Education
Bachelors or Masters Degree in Human Sciences (Engineering Psychology, Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, Cultural Anthropology), Design (Interaction Design, Communication Design, Product Design, Industrial Design Engineering) or similar field.
Bachelor or Masters Degree in Marketing strongly desired.

Experience
• 6-8 Years experience in user interface and human factors design for handheld consumer electronics products, handheld computers or other consumer electronic devices.
• 3-6 years experience managing human resources, preferably diverse disciplines, including marketing, design and technical resources.
• At least 3 years experience leading design efforts utilizing 3rd party suppliers with demonstrable short-term and long-term results.
• Specific experience in the wireless industry, either with wireless carrier, manufacturer or wireless software design firm a requirement.
• Strong knowledge of handheld device software architecture, RTOS environments, Java and Linux highly desired.

Skills and Abilities
• Solid understanding of the wireless industry and current trends in UI/UE with device vendors and wireless carriers.
• Strong sense and intuition for usability and design, with ability to balance creativity and practicality.
• Strong people management, coaching and counseling skills.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Superior Written and Oral Communication Skills, including Interpersonal and Negotiation Skills.
• Ability to build consensus and work across organizational boundaries.
• Proven performer with measurable successes leading to bottom-line positive results.
